Dave Cushion is another excellent soap making expert. His book "Soap Making Made Simple" is a wealth of soap making information. Dave's book is the most comprehensive book of the bunch. You'll start out making a simple basic soap and then work into advanced techniques. Dave shows you what molds to choose and goes into details about different kinds of soaps you can make like liquid and hand-milled soaps. He also gives tips on packaging your soaps for gifts or re-sale.
Finally, if you decide you really love making soap and plan on turning this fascinating hobby into a business, you may want to consider "Soap Making for Profit" by Gary Everson. It covers everything you need to know to make a clean profit. We suggest you pick up Dave Cushion's book first and then Gary's if you want more detailed information on the business end of making soap.
Once you've got a background in making soap, you'll need to gather the stuff to make your first batch.
We scoured the Internet for good soap making suppliers. Our criteria is simple:
In addition to seeking out suppliers with good reputations for excellent quality and service, they also needed to
Provide good value
Carry sufficient inventory
Offer a wide range of products
The Fit 4 Life Team's Top Pick?
We found Essential Wholesale the best of the bunch. The have a tremendous selection at good prices. Our biggest complaint is they tend to be a bit technical in their product descriptions. When looking for liquid Glycerin (a commodity-type product we used as a benchmark) we had to look under "Humecants". Don't worry, you'll quickly pick up any lingo you need. While they don't always offer the lowest prices, they are very competitive. Plus they offer exstensive information via their free "EW University".
Our next choice is Candlewic. Yes, they are a candle company first - you'll find a lot of that - but they have a decent selection at excellent prices. You really need to "do the math" to figure out if they offer best bargains, but you'll find they often do. However they don't offer near the selection Essential Wholesale has.
Finally, we'd like to mention our own "500 Bath and Beauty Recipes". Sure you can get some excellent recipes from most of the sites above, but for just a few dollars you can have 500 right at your fingertips without trying to remember where you put that link.
We've done all the reasearch for you - now all you've got to do is go make some soap :-)
