The Truth About Negative Calorie Diets

Negative Calorie Diets are some of the most popular diets around. What makes them so desireable? While They are not without detractors many day this type of diet does work.

Many are attracted to the idea they can stuff themselves and still lose weight. What are "negative calorie foods"? Since all foods have calories, the "negative" part supposedly means these foods need more calories to digest than they supply. Is this true?

Possibly. Some say celery has so much fiber and so few calories, eating it could result in an actual loss of calories by eating it. Someone else points out ice contains no calories (water) yet it takes energy (calories) to eat.

While ice and celery may be considered to have a negative calorie effect on humans, one cannot expect to live on ice and celery.  For one thing, they lack the nutrients to keep
folks functioning. While most negative calorie advocates list 100 or more foods in this category, there is no solid research validating this hypothesis. In order to stay
healthy, our bodies need a certain amount of basic nutrients.

To be fair, many claim the Negative Calorie Diet does work. One report reveals this diet is based on what's known as the "Cabbage Soup Diet". I'd rename it too. Others say the
negative calorie diet requires you to eat very little. It seems to suggest you limit your intake under 1200 calories per say, an idea that would raise a red flag for most health professionals.

The problem is any diet that severely limits calorie intake - negative or not - will work. The question is at what cost? Most experts agree filling up with the wrong foods can actually do more damage than good. Such a diet cannot be maintained over the long run. So if you do lose a lot of weight quickly, there's a good chance you could gain it all
back.
